"Lent" is a 40-day period  from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday.  This season has been observed by Christians since the year 200 AD.

During Lent, Christians concentrate on spiritual devotional practices and focus on personal discipleship in light of the sacrificial cross of Christ.

The official color of the season is violet, which has traditionally been associated with repentance and spiritual renewal.
